On behalf of the foundation ‘No child shall remain hungry’ (Minden gyerek lakjon jól), for the first time in 2011, we launched an innovative fundraising campaign on Hungarian television – which has now become a tradition.

The aim was to collect donations for malnourished children in the context of the daily reality show Való Világ (the Hungarian counterpart to Big Brother) where the viewers were called to make a paid call or to send an SMS. At the same time, during the campaign, the participants of the show had to go through situations live on TV on a daily basis that confronted people with precarious living conditions.

The revenues of the campaign were, on the one hand, converted into donation packages with non-perishable foods, on the other hand, the necessary supplies for agriculture and livestock could be provided to the families as required. The latter should help persons concerned to produce their own food in the long term, as a supplement to the unique help in the form of the food package.

The highlight of the one-week event was the sensational gala event, accompanied by the participants of the reality show and the current stars of the popular casting show X-Faktor. Thanks to the incoming calls and SMS, 177 million forints or half a million euros could be raised, which benefited low-income families in the form of seeds, livestock, agricultural equipment and food.

Never before in Hungarian commercial television has such a high sum for the people in need been collected as within this unconventional fund raising campaign. Since then, the possibilities for educating people about precarious living conditions as well as the corresponding collection of donations in the context of the reality shows are often used.
